Featured in Fashion Magazine

100% PURE Argan oil Hydration Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30 was featured in Fashion magazines' 35th Anniversary Edition.

100% PURE is a line of cosmetics and skin care coloured from antioxidant rich fruit and vegetable pigments. All the antioxidants and vitamins are in the pigments, so you'll be applying all the healthy nutrients of the fruits directly to your skin.

The restorative properties and healing benefits of Argan Oil have made it an amazing ingredient for skincare. Argan Oil has an extremely high content of anti-aging, nourishing, and moisturizing compounds, including vitamin E, phenols, squalene, and essential fatty acids.

I love that this pure Argan Oil is from a small women's cooperative in Morocco, supporting the local women of the Berber tribe as well as their entire community.

100% Pure Argan Oil Hydration SPF 30 contains broad spectrum SPF to protect your skin from the sun's UVA and UVB rays, and is loaded with antioxidants that fight off other environmental stressors that cause skin damage and aging - such as smog, pollution, cigarette smoke.    Argan oil absorbs quickly and easily. Research has also shown argan oil to be an effective treatment for psoriasis and other skin conditions. The nourishing formula contains non-nano SPF, and is free of toxic chemicals, fragrances, and preservatives.

Use this lightweight yet highly nourishing 100% PURE Argan Oil on your skin, hair, and cuticles!

Heading South for March Break - Don't forget Your Sunscreen

You may have noticed the reappearance of the sunscreens on the drugstore shelves. Retailers are getting ready for March Break as are most of us. And of course as you wouldn't head south without your bikini, throw that sunscreen in your suitcase too. And because it's been a while since we've had any sun or sunscreen on us, we decided to debunk two big myths.

Is SPF 50 twice the protection of SPF25?
No SPF 50 does not afford you more time in the sun or twice as much time in the sun. In fact, the protection that we get from each increase of an SPF level is not proportionate to the number on the label.  For example: SPF 50 absorbs 98% of UV radiation while SPF 25 absorbs 96% of UV rays. But that's not the alarming part.  The alarming part is that high sunscreen wearers believe that they can stay in the sun that much more time. Always remember to reapply after 2 hours regardless of the level of sunscreen you are wearing.

Do I need a specific SPF for my face?
Although, technically you do not need a separate SPF for the face, you may want to consider one. Some sunscreens are formulated so as not to clog pores. While other high SPF's include in the formulation tinting so your face doesn't look white. On a whole, the same SPF that you use on your body is okay to use on your face.

So start packing and don't forget the sunscreen!

Little Divas

My three year old niece is already a girly girl who loves to dress up and get mani's just like her mom.  Her mom was worried about putting nail polish on her daughter, so I gave her a bottle of "I'm a little Dutch Girl from Hopscotch Kids™"  All of the colours are names after nursery rhymes and schoolyard games. How cute is that?

Hopscotch Kids™ WaterColors is the premier non-toxic, kid-friendly alternative to solvent-based nail polish and actually act as a nail conditioner unlike conventional brands.

Hopscotch™  is not one of the so called 'three free' polishes; the line is also free of ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nitrocellulose, acetone, and heavy metals. Besides being toxin free, this product is paraben free, fragrance free, cruelty free, plus it is vegan, hypoallergenic and biodegradable.  Truly non-toxic.

The actual ingredients are water, acrylic polymer emulsion, butoxy diglycol and non-toxic colorants.   Hopscotch Kids and their grown-up line - Scotch Naturals - are great.   Treat the little divas in your house to our luxurious and eco-friendly nail polish!

Oils & Serums

Oils and serums provide the most effective way of delivering essential nutrients to your skin.  Use facial oils and serums at night as a rejuvenating facial treatment or under makeup during the day.    Serums contain concentrated active ingredients and you only need a few drops to feel the nourishing, hydrating effects.

Rose Hip Oil is made from the oil of the seed pod left after the petals have fallen off of a very specific variety of Rose - Rosa aff. rubinosa or Rosa moschata)and is rich in some of the skin's most treasured nutrients- Vitamin A and C and  essential fatty acids. Rose hip oil is renowned for it's multiple benefits for the skin; healing scars including acne scars and old scars), dry eczema, facial rosacea, skin burns, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and rehydrating dry skin. The oil can penetrate due to the vitamin A which has small enough molecules to go deeper into the skin. Vitamin A also improves the skin's moisture levels to give the appearance of reducing wrinkles and fine lines.  The Vitamin A combined with the oils essential fatty acids help improve skin tone, texture and pigmentation.  I highly recommend the Rosehip Oil Moisturizing Serum by Cocoon Apothecary.  The only ingredient is 100% organic roseship oil!   My son used rosehip oil to successfully heal scar tissue that is fading very well over time.

If you're looking for the ultimate body serum that nourishes, hydrates and makes your skin more supple- One Love Organics Gardenia + Tea body serum is itl!   It's ultra-light and easily absorbed and can be used alone or layered with your favorite sunscreen or lotion for an intensely hydrating treatment. It so luxurious and makes my skin feel amazing.  The Supercritical Sea Buckhorn Oil nourishes skin with a generous helping of the rare and highly beneficial Omega-7.

I'm obsessed with Argan Oil because it's naturally rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamin E another ingredients that help to heal skin, reduce inflammation and fend off free radicals.  Argan Oil is produced from the kernels of the Argan tree (native to Morocco) and is particuarly rich in lineolic acid, which is the precursor to vitamin E, making it twice as rich in tocopherolas (vitamin E) as olive oil, and giving it incredible moisturizing, regenerating and antioxidant properties. It reduces the production of sebum (great for combination skin types) and can be used on any area of your body to relieve dryness, itchiness, inflammation or any other skin or hair or nail ailment. Tyr our 100% PURE Argan Oil Hydration moisturizer With SPF 30 to block out the suns' UVB and UVA rays,  infused with rosehip oil, green tea leaf and organic aloe, this nutrient rich moisturizer with soften and nourish your skin, help repair damaged hair, reduce wrinkles and acne.  I think you'll love this product as much as I do!

Hyaluronic Acid is a natural component found in skin that has many functions including holding moisture, providing cushioning, aiding tissue repair, holding together the skin structural components collagen and elastin and helping create a protective barrier against microorganisms. With passing years, the the Hyaluronic Acid (HA) content in skin decreases, causing skin to become dry, sagging and blotchy (ew!).  HA is a large molecule, it doesn't permeate deep into the skin but stays near the surface where it moisturizes the skin surface layers. Hyarulonic Acid holds up to 1,000 times it's weight in water and retains water in the intercellular matrix of dermai connective tissue, increasing viscosity and elasticity- which contributes significantly to the skin maintaining a youthful appearance.

The science behind this stuff is fascinating! EIther layered under your favourite moisturizer for added benefit or used on its own, I highly recommend  Derma E Hyaluronic Rehydrating Serum.    This hydrating serum has a unique combination of ingredients that deeply hydrates and luxuriously delivers moisture directly to the skin to 'plump' it, which reduces the appearances of lines and wrinkles.

Check out the Hydrextreme by Consonant - an extreme hydration booster  - in our next post.  You will see more smooth, youthful and hydrated skin instantly.   It also helps soothe eczema, post waxing irritation and other skin ailments.

Adria Vasil's "Mean 15"

Adria Vasil, the best selling author of Ecoholic, Ecoholic Home and Ecoholic Body, has been writing her humour-filled, easy to read weekly ECOHOLIC advice column in NOW magazine since 2004!  She writes about everything from how to green your food choices to how to detoxify your home and office.

In Ecoholic Body, Adria gives us the low-down on all things toxic in the products we put on our body - shampoo, deodorant, soap, makeup, skin care, you name it.  She even provides some DIY recipes.   So, read the labels on all of the products that you're putting on your body!

Adria was recently voted a Kickass Canadian and in Ecoholic Body, recommended Holly & Ivy as one of her kickass websites -  and that's just one of the reasons we love her!

We've done the research, so you can feel confident that all of the products we offer are not only safe for you, they are proven, successful brands.

Here's the list of what Adria calls the "Mean 15" - the ingredients in body care products we all need to shelve for good.

1. BHA and BHT: Cancer-linked preservatives.

2. DEA/MEA/TEA (diethanolamine): Can create carcinogenic by-products.

3. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: (DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15 and bronopol a.k.a. 2-bromo-2-nitropro-pane-1,3-diol).

4. Oxybenzone (BP-3/benzophenone) and octinoxate (octylmethoxcinnamate): Two of the worst sunscreen chemicals.

5. Palm Oil: (or anything with "palm" or "palmate" in its name, like sodium palmate): Avoid unless it's fair trade/organic.

6. Parabens: Estrogenic preservatives.

7. Parfum/fragrance: Note: some natural Euro brands with "parfums" are made with natural essential oils (it should say so on the label).

8. PEGs: (polyethylene glycol compounds, and anything with "-eth" in its name).

9. Petrolatum/paraffin/mineral oil/petroleum distillates.

10. PPD: In all permanent hair dyes. Can also be called p-Aminoaniline: 1,4-benzenediamine; p-benzendiamine CI 76060; p-diaminobenzene; 1,4-phenylendia-mine; 1,4-diaminobenzene.

11. Phthalates: Hidden behind the word "fragrance," but you can look for the phrase "phthalate free."

12. Retinyl palmitate: Keep this one out of the sun.

13. Siloxanes: Pass on cyclo- or "-methicone." Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and cyclopentasiloxane (D5) are eco toxic siloxanes (silicone-based polymers). Cyclomethicone is a mix of D4, D5 and D6 siloxanes.

14. Sodium laureth sulphate: Frequently contaminated foaming agent.

15. Triclosan/triclocarbon: Now officially toxic but still on shelves!
